These three General Assistant (RoG) positions are based in Limpopo – Mogalakwena. The three successful candidates will be expected to assistance to the truck operator to collect products at silos and deliver this product down the hole at the blasting face. To responsible for the housekeeping and maintenance of the vehicle, re-filling area and other working areas

Qualifications

• Grade 12 ( Maths)
• Code 08 / Code B Licence (desirable)
• Magazine Master Ticket (desirable)
• Blasting assistant certificate (MQA)
• Stemming Loader/Skidsteer Licence (desirable)

Experience

• Previous experience in blasting / mining environment
• 2 years blasting assistant experience

Duties

• Risk assessment and Safe work declarations to be done with the blaster at the place of work before entering workplace as per client requirements
• Assisting the blaster for preparing the blast / charge-up area by meeting all the statutory, legal, client and BME requirements/standards/prescriptions
• Together with the Blaster, inspects the site to determine the target block and to plan the blasting process
• Marks off the working area by erecting the prescribed barricading material as prescribed by the client
• Required to map the holes to ensure that all the required holes correctly placed
• Required to measure and check the depth of the holes, and to ensure that they are all correctly drilled within the prescribed parameters
• In the event of detecting any deviations from prescriptions, responsible for behaving assertively and taking the necessary steps to rectify matters, e.g, by interacting and communicating to mine staff, drill contractor or the Foreman
• On instruction from the Blaster, required to collect the correct accessories to carry out the blasting assignment successfully
• Responsible to place all detonators and boosters at the collar of the hole to prepare for priming of the blast holes as per the blast plan issued by the mine
• Responsible for priming the holes by carefully inserting detonators into boosters, attaching weigh-down material to the primer, and lower this primer in the hole under the supervision of the blaster
• Make sure that the primer is anchored at the collar of the hole
• Required to ensure that holes are pumped with explosive to the right level in the hole by assisting in re-checking the stemming with measuring tape or twine
• Once satisfied that the pumping process has been satisfactorily completed, required to fill the holes by spade / skidsteer / stemming loader or stemming truck with the available stemming material
• Required to complete the timing design by connecting the accessories to one another under the supervision of the blaster
• Required to assist in the fault finding and checking of the tie-up of the holes
• Required to assist with the charging of secondary and pre-split holes with cartridge explosives under the direct supervision of a blaster
• Required to ensure that all personnel and vehicles are cleared from and are at a safe distance from the detonation area
• Required to be place as a blast guard to ensure no person enters the blasting area
• Required to ensure that the required number of guards are set up at key points so that unauthorised or unsafe entry into the area can be prevented
• Responsible for all housekeeping and around the area of the blast pattern
• Assisting in the housekeeping of the blasting vehicles (LDV’s, trucks and stemming loaders), all blasting equipment and blasting consumables
• In the event of all primary detonation duties being completed, on the instruction from the Blaster/foreman/site manager required to engage in housekeeping duties on site including sweeping, weeding, cleaning of ablution facilities
• Prior to use of the truck, required to assist the Truck Operator in conducting the prescribed pre-use inspections
• Responsible for the cleanliness of the blasting vehicles on an on-going basis so that it is presentable in the eye of the public
• Personal cleanliness at all times
• Under the supervision of the Truck Operator, required to re-fill the truck at the loading points with the prescribed raw materials / products
• In the performance of these duties, responsible for adhering to all the SHEQ prescriptions
• Takes a sample of the product as per BME standards, and/or customer requirements, to ensure that the product quality remains within spec and records it on the sheet provided
• Performs general administrative duties such as correct completion of loading sheets, pre-use checklists, as per BME standards.
• Complete grease schedules, calibrations and truck performance.
• Supervises the work of the Truck Assistant
